A Configuration Item is

[a]n identified part of an information system that is a discrete target of a configuration control process.[1]
any of the following components: hardware, software, system documentation, project office documentation, contracts, system interfaces, project office tools, contractor deliverables, networks, websites, desktop components, and databases.[2]
[a]n aggregation of information system components that is designated for configuration management and treated as a single entity in the configuration management process.[3]
[a]n aggregation of hardware, firmware, computer software, or any of their discrete portions, which satisfies an end-use function and is designated by the government for separate configuration management. CIs may vary widely in complexity, size, and type, from an aircraft, electronic or ship system, to a test meter or round of ammunition.[4]
