Citation Edit

Communications Satellite Act of 1962, Pub. L. No. 87-624 (Aug. 31, 1962) codified at 47 U.S.C. §§701-44.

Overview Edit

The Act created a private, for-profit communications satellite corporation (COMSAT), subject to Government regulation to operate a worldwide commercial communications satellite system.

It permitted the corporation to plan, establish, and operate with other foreign governments and businesses a commercial communications satellite system; however, its use must conform to this Nation's foreign policy. The corporation's authority extends to operating satellite terminal stations when licensed by the Federal Communications Commission. It requires the FCC to regulate the corporation, with advice from NASA on the technical aspects of the system.
