Command, control and communications (C3) is

[t]he exercise of authority and direction by a properly designated commander over assigned forces in the accomplishment of the mission. C3 includes the communications employed by a commander in planning, directing, coordination, and controlling forces and operations in the accomplishment of the mission.[1]
