Codec (an abbreviation for compressor-decompressor or coder-decoder) is

[a]n electronic device that converts analog video signals into a digital format for transmission, and vice versa.[1]
the packaging instructions used for encoding (during recording) and decoding (during playback) the information within a file wrapper; e.g. PCM and MP3.[2]
