Definition Edit

Coaxial cable (coax) is

[s]hielded wire cable that connects communications components. Coaxial cable is commonly used in cable television systems because of its ability to carry multiple video (or other broadband) signals.[1]

Overview Edit

It is composed of an insulated wire that runs through the middle of each cable, a second wire that surrounds the insulation of the inner wire like a sheath, and the outer insulation which wraps the second wire.

Coaxial cable has a greater transmission capacity (which does not equate to greater speed) than standard twisted-pair cables but has a limited range.
