[a]n official register of the location, quantity, value, and ownership of real estate, compiled to serve as a basis for taxation.[1]
the map of ownership and boundaries of land parcels, often used to record ownership and assist in calculating taxes.[2]

Overview[]

"The term derives from the French cadastre, a register of the survey of lands and is, in effect, the public record of the extent, value, and ownership of land for purposes of taxation."[3]

"Parcels of land in a cadastre are often uniquely identified, by number or by code, and are reasonably persistent through time, thus satisfying the requirements of a georeferencing system."[4]
