Bit rot (also known as bit decay, data rot, or data decay) is

the phenomenon in which a program (or features of a program) will suddenly stop working after a long time, even though 'nothing has changed' in the environment. In fact, the environment has changed, although perhaps in subtle and unnoticed ways.[1]

Bit rot is "the corruption of data stored on media."[2]
