Basic research is
|“||[the] systematic study directed toward fuller knowledge or understanding of the fundamental aspects of phenomena and of observable facts without specific applications towards processes or products in mind.||”|
|“||experimental or theoretical work undertaken primarily to acquire new knowledge of the underlying foundation of phenomena and observable facts, without any particular application or use in mind.||”|
|“||work motivated by a desire to better understand fundamental aspects of phenomena without specific applications in mind; it is often called curiosity-driven research.||”|
Although basic research may not have specific applications as its goal, it can be directed in fields of present or potential interest. This is often the case with basic research performed by industry or mission-driven federal agencies.
