Back-up generations is

[a] tape rotation methodology that creates three sets of back-up tapes: daily incremental sets or “sons,” weekly full sets or “fathers,” and end-of-month tapes or “grandfathers.” This back-up methodology is frequently used to refer to master files for financial applications.[1]
