An automated access control system is

[a]n electronic or electro-mechanical system used to allow authorized movement of personnel, vehicles, or material through entrances and exits of a secured area. Authorization is obtained by the user entering personal identification information (e.g., through a magnetic card reader, personal identification number, or biometric scan), an electronic comparison of identification data against an authorized users list, and activation of the portal unlock mechanism if the requestor's name is on the list of authorized personnel.[1]
