Augmented reality (AR) is

• the live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by virtual computer-generated imagery.
• [t]he use of transparent glasses on which a computer displays data so that the viewer can simultaneously view computer-generated and real world scenes.
• created when the real world is viewed through a device, such as a smartphone camera, and a digital image is superimposed onto the real world view.

Overview

It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer. As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one's current perception of reality.
