Applied research is

[the] systematic study to gain knowledge or understanding necessary to determine the means by which a recognized and specific need may be met.[1]
original investigation undertaken in order to acquire new knowledge. It is . . . directed primarily towards a specific practical aim or objective.[2]
work performed to gain the understanding needed to meet a particular need; it is often called problem-oriented research.[3]
