Definition
An app (short for application) generally refers to a software application that can run on a smartphone (such as an iPhone), an iPad or other brand of tablet computer, or a personal computer.
Overview
Apps are beneficial because they allow users to receive information, such as news updates or other alerts, from their mobile devices while on the go. The mobility of devices also allows users to provide the timeliest information even when they do not have immediate access to a computer.
While mobile apps offer numerous benefits they can pose potential privacy concerns because of the unique but commonly used capabilities of mobile technology, such as location services and the use of unique device identifiers. As a result of the relationship between mobile devices and Personally Identifiable Information (PII) or other sensitive information, there is concern that appropriate privacy protections are included in mobile apps.
