Definition Edit

An amplifier is an

[e]lectronic component use to boost (amplify) signals. Performance (called gain) [is] measured in decibels.[1]

Overview Edit

"In an analog system, the signal weakens and becomes corrupted by noise and distortion as it moves along a wire, unless it is regularly boosted by amplifiers. But amplifiers cannot distinguish signal from noise, and they boost both, while adding some additional noise and distortion. These distortions accumulate over a long transmission path until the desired signal may become almost unintelligible."[2]
