Overview Edit

The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) was established in 1982 by the U.S. Congress and member organizations of the Joint Committee on InterSociety Coordination (JCIC): the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA), the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA), and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE). The ATSC has since grown to 52 member and observer organizations.

The ATSC developed the standards for digital television (DTV) in the United States — also adopted by Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and Honduras.

The majority of the world uses the DVB standard for digital television.
