Overview[]

Launched in 1991, the Advanced Public Transportation Systems (APTS) is a program of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration to undertake research and development of innovative applications of advanced navigation, communication, information, computer, and vehicle technologies that most benefit public transportation.

The program coordinates all Federally-sponsored transit Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) programs and initiatives. ITS is the application of computer and electronic technologies to the transportation network to provide more efficient and effective solutions to current transportation challenges. The goal of ITS is to offer significant improvements in safety, productivity, accessibility, and mobility while establishing an intermodal surface transportation system.
